As an international intern in Kisumu, Kenya, with Women Volunteers for Peace (WOVOP), I'm deeply engaged in supporting the organization's goals and objectives. Our primary focus is on serving diverse age groups of women, particularly girls and young women at risk, through initiatives in mental health promotion, peace, and security education within the Lake Region Economic Bloc of Kenya. WOVOP implements a range of programs for the girls and women served, from promoting peace and security to addressing sexual and reproductive health, mental health, and environmental adaptation, including responses to COVID-19 and climate change.

Approaching this opportunity from a feminist-informed perspective, I'm struck by the urgent need to address biopsychosocial factors prevalent in Kenya, especially concerning issues like sexual harassment and assault. Shockingly, statistics show that over 32% of Kenyan females experience sexual violence before turning 18 (Wangu Kanja Foundation, 2016). Understanding the profound, immediate, and long-term impacts of such violence is crucial for providing effective support and care, emphasizing sensitivity and awareness of survivors' potential trauma.

Kenya's societal landscape operates within a traditional patriarchal framework, which mirrors many African countries, perpetuating gender inequalities and restricting women's autonomy while reinforcing power imbalances. Challenging these structures is pivotal in promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls within this context. Additionally, local customs and religious beliefs significantly shape gender norms, underscoring the importance of respecting and integrating these cultural practices into mental health services. As foreigners coming to provide mental health support, respecting local customs is essential for building trust and rapport within the community. It also means to take the time to learn and engage with these cultural practices demonstrates respect for the community's values, fostering collaboration and partnership. Integrating these practices into mental health services enhances efficacy and reduces stigma associated with mental health disorders.

For the adolescent and young adult women I am working with this summer, I foresee the application of various skills, interventions, and concepts across different settings and scenarios. Many of WOVOP's clients seek treatment for a range of traumas and situations, necessitating a flexible approach that integrates different skills and intervention methods as appropriate.

Given the prevalence of trauma, particularly related to sexual violence, adopting a trauma-informed approach is critical. This approach involves recognizing trauma's signs and symptoms, creating safe environments, and implementing interventions that support healing and resilience. Psychoeducation plays a crucial role in empowering women within their families, tribes, and communities, while techniques such as empowerment and resilience-building help them recover from traumatic experiences. I am heavily influenced to use empathy and active listening as valuable skills in establishing meaningful therapeutic relationships, encouraging open communication, and validating clients' experiences.

Moreover, acknowledging the strengths, resilience, and resources within individuals and communities empowers them to take an active role in their well-being. By focusing on strengths rather than deficits, clients can tap into their inherent capabilities and build upon their assets. Understanding and respecting the cultural norms, values, and traditions of the communities I'll be serving is essential for building trust and tailoring therapeutic approaches to meet the unique needs and preferences of young women in Kisumu, Kenya. Cultivating cultural competence ensures that interventions are sensitive and responsive to the community's realities, fostering trust and facilitating effective care in the community that we serve.
