Sexual reproductive health and rights is a topic that needs to be addressed as it relates to several human rights including the right to life, the right to be free from torture, the right to health, the right to education and freedom from discrimination. Oftentimes, sexual reproductive health has been glossed over when discussing matters of importance in a society unmindful that it is just as of importance as the other factors that are considered crucial.
How do we achieve a healthy society without delving into matters of reproductive health? How do we achieve peace at an individual level without addressing sexual reproductive health and rights?
In many parts of our society, sexual reproductive health and rights services are limited or non-existent. Do you know that young girls and women often face discrimination and stigma relating sexual reproductive health? To address this issues, Women Volunteers for Peace (WOVOP) has promoted awareness among young girls and women and advocated for policies and programs that support access to Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR)services.
We can therefore agree that this is a topic that needs an open discussion. Let us sail into SRHR and what it entails;
Sexual reproductive health and rights is an integral human right that encompasses the right for one to have control over one's own body including the right to access information and services related to sexual reproductive health. This is to say that everyone including children and adolescents are entitled to SRHR.
The importance of SRHR cannot be overstated. It is essential for the well-being of individuals, families and communities. At its core, SRHR is not a niche concern; it's a gateway to a healthier, more equitable society. The ability to control one's reproductive choices is intrinsically linked to broader human rights principles, including the right to life, health, education, and freedom from discrimination. SRHR is therefore a catalyst for empowering women and girls, transcending its health implications. The initiatives led by WOVOP exemplify this, going beyond mere health services. The #keepagirlsafeandinschool campaign, for instance, recognizes the intersectionality of education and reproductive health, ensuring that young girls not only have access to information about their bodies but also the tools to manage their menstruation with dignity. SRHR, when addressed openly and inclusively, becomes a powerful tool to counter discrimination and stigma surrounding sexual and reproductive matters.
The broader implications of SRHR extend to community well-being. By facilitating access to SRHR services, we not only empower individuals but also create healthier communities. Controlling unplanned pregnancies, ensuring safe abortions, and preventing the spread of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) contribute to the overall resilience and vitality of the community. In essence, the undeniable importance of SRHR lies in its role as a cornerstone for fostering societies where autonomy, dignity, and equality prevail. It's a call to action, urging us to recognize the interconnectedness of human rights and work collectively towards a world where everyone has the agency to shape their own destinies.
Ultimately, by promoting awareness of SRHR and advocating for policies and programs that support access to SRHR services, we can see to it that everyone has the right to control their own bodies and live healthy and fulfilling lives!
