WOVOP VOLUNTEER/INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES-Meet Anne Kummer 📝

Meet Anne Kummer, a 22 year old ,young enthusiastic fellow from the University of Bayreth in Germany where she is currently pursuing Geography, Development studies/African studies. In mid-2022, Anne showed a strong interest in supporting WOVOP’s work as a practicing social psychologist when she applied for her summer internship .

Anne joined WOVOP as an intern to complete her mandatory internship journey where she embarked on a transformative three-month internship in support of the vision that WOVOP is keen to achieving. Anne demostrated her passion for the Girls talk program which seeks to empower AGYW (Adolescent Girls and Young Women) to reduce unplanned pregnancies and facilitate the transition of young women to higher education by 2026. Through her involvement with AGYW in the communities we serve, she became deeply invested in the growth and development of adolescent girls and young women.

While working at WOVOP, her solution oriented attitude, leadership skills and passion shaped her efforts towards supporting the elimination of the prevalence “sex for pads" menace in Kisumu County. She fearlessly tackled this through consultations in developing a compelling campaign plan and fundraising strategies that has seen more than 1000 girls supported for the last 8 months with dignity kits. Recognizing the urgent need to foster confidence among young women and girls who stand up for themselves, she sought to push for the need for these girls to challenge and change the existing systems that dims their light.

During her time at WOVOP, Anne reflected that she found moments of joy and camaraderie through team building activities and workshops. These events provided her with the opportunity to directly engage with girls, young women, and stakeholders, discussing the impactful programs at WOVOP.

Towards the end of her internship, she enthusiastically praised WOVOP as an excellent organization, leading on quality empowerment for young people especially through Girls talk , Peace talks, and digital advocacy efforts which are carried out both in the physical and virtual environments.

In addition to the invaluable experiences at WOVOP helping her pursue her goals, Anne Kummer, described the supportive and welcoming environment WOVOP provided her with by saying, ''I never felt left out!". Anne commended WOVOP for going an extra mile in training interns and volunteers by equipping them with the necessary skills to excel not just in local contexts, but also in complex global agenda.

"WOVOP feels more like a home than a workplace. It's a vibrant and fun environment that opens countless doors for personal and professional growth. Though challenges may arise along the way, especially those that require contextual interventions, WOVOP provided me with immense Afro-learning opportunities and exposure for development. I eagerly look forward to welcoming and speaking to any students who might be interested and require guidance on how to get to WOVOP and support her vision.” Stated Anne.

“My internship was an extraordinary experience!" expressed Anne, capturing the essence of her time at WOVOP. Upon completing her internship, she decided to support WOVOP as a volunteer and currently serves as a Fundraising Officer remotely while she carries on with her studies. She is also part of WOVOP Advisory Board and supports critical strategic decisions at our organization.

Anne Kummer's journey at WOVOP showcases the transformative power of dedication and passion. Her contributions towards empowering young women and girls by tackling pressing societal issues will forever be remembered as part of her impactful mission.
