Hello, everyone! Today, we're thrilled to introduce you to Catherine Khayali, a 26-year-old with a heart full of compassion and a passion for gender advocacy. Catherine joined the Women Volunteers for Peace (WOVOP) as an intern for three months during her academic journey in Development Studies at Maseno University. She said it was an experience she'll cherish forever! Awesome, Eye-opening, Adventurous are the three words that perfectly capture Catherine's transformative journey with WOVOP, she added.

One thing that deeply impressed Catherine was WOVOP's unwavering dedication to helping the girls they reached out to. The community's love and respect for their efforts were evident as they faced minimal harassment. She expressed that the sense of purpose and passion in the team was truly inspiring.

A challenge that hit close to home for Catherine was post-election violence among the youth at Kondele. WOVOP had been preaching peace throughout the election period, but the youths still resorted to violent protests after the results were announced. Catherine and the team were deeply concerned about finding more effective ways to promote lasting peace and unity. Catherine claimed that her heart sank when she witnessed the destruction of businesses started by the youths at Kondele. The losses affected the individuals deeply, leaving lasting scars. However, the resilience of the community in the face of adversity showed her the strength and spirit of Kisumu's people.

Amidst the challenges, Catherine's spirits were lifted by the team's wonderful team-building activities. She fondly remembers the camaraderie and laughter shared with her colleagues. Catherine said she formed a strong bond with the Executive Director, Grace, whose vibrant personality never failed to uplift the spirits of everyone around her.

WOVOP's work in the community left Catherine in awe. She learned that working for the greater good of the community and the nation at large is the key to true impact. Catherine actively engaged in Article Writing, sharing WOVOP's initiatives with the community, and participated in the Girls Talk, which distributed pads to underserved girls in school, promoting their dignity and empowerment.

Catherine expressed that she felt right at home with the WOVOP team. Their warmth and care were evident when her colleague offered her a massage and water during her pregnancy, making her feel cherished and valued. Catherine said she fit right in, and her experience felt like being part of a close-knit family.

The Peace Project held a special place in Catherine's heart, “By consistently preaching peace in Kisumu, WOVOP challenged stereotypes and inspired people to act in more peaceful ways. It's through such initiatives that Kisumu will continue to flourish as a beacon of harmony.”

Catherine's passion for WOVOP extends beyond Kisumu. She shared her dreams of seeing WOVOP's remarkable work expand not only across Kenya but also into neighbouring countries, touching more lives and making a lasting difference.

Catherine wholeheartedly recommends young people to join WOVOP's exchange or volunteer/internship program, “It's a place where girls can grow, learn, and enjoy themselves while impacting the greater community. The experience leaves a lasting impression, empowering the youth to become the change they wish to see.”

So, there you have it - the inspiring journey of Catherine Khayali and her impactful experience with WOVOP. We hope her story touches your heart and inspires you to join hands with WOVOP in creating a more equitable and peaceful world.
