Step into the inspiring world of Duncan Nyamor as we embark on a captivating blog that delves into his transformative journey of empowerment.

Join Duncan Nyamor Odhiambo, a 28-year-old Kenyan BBA student from Maseno University as he shares his inspiring experience with the Women Volunteers for Peace (WOVOP). He was a volunteer at WOVOP from 2021 to May 2023, playing his role as a peace champion in Kisumu West leading Kisian Peace Corner. His love for soccer was made purposeful when he joined WOVOP to use football as a tool for mobilization and to address social issues in his community.

During the 2 years experience, his curiosity was piqued by WOVOP's professionalism and dedication to addressing girls' and young women's issues in schools and the Kisumu west community where he lived. He marveled at how the organization provided a safe platform for these girls to express themselves, learn about menstrual hygiene, and receive essential supplies like sanitary towels. Through his involvement, he discovered the power of education, support, and community in creating positive change.

While there were low moments like witnessing the struggles faced by young girls, Duncan said that he found joy and inspiration in the courage, resilience, and mental strength these girls exhibited during his time at WOVOP. Engaging in fun activities such as photo sessions and ball games fostered a sense of camaraderie and reinforced the importance of supporting one another.

Duncan reflects that he felt an immediate sense of belonging within the WOVOP team. The friendliness, support, and teamwork displayed by his fellow teammates made him feel at home from the very beginning. Among the various projects, the "Keep a Girl safe and in School" campaign stood out to Duncan due to the knowledge he gained about the experiences of young women and the positive impact the campaign had on their lives. He stated that this was one of the challenges that deeply interested and involved him. Recognizing that unwanted pregnancies were leading to school dropouts, Duncan witnessed first-hand the negative impact of peer pressure, poverty, and cultural beliefs on these young girls' lives. However, through WOVOP's campaign, he states that he saw how the organization was actively working to mitigate these challenges and empower girls to continue their education.

Impressed by WOVOP's work, Duncan wholeheartedly recommended that both non-governmental and governmental organizations consider partnering with WOVOP to support their ongoing projects. He also encouraged anyone interested in making a difference to join the team and contribute their skills and expertise. Additionally, Duncan highlighted the benefits of exchange programs, emphasizing the opportunities for personal growth and cross-cultural learning.

For aspiring volunteers, Duncan stated that, “ I believe that volunteering with WOVOP provides a unique opportunity to engage with different programs and learn from diverse social groups. I recognize WOVOP as a pathway to both personal development and potential employment, offering invaluable experiences and skills that can shape a fulfilling future.”

Duncan reflects that his journey with WOVOP has been transformative, highlighting the importance of education, support, and community in empowering girls and young women. Through the organization's initiatives, Duncan acknowledged the positive impact of providing a safe space, knowledge, and resources to create a healthier and more equitable society. Inspired by his experiences, Duncan encouraged others to support WOVOP and actively engage in creating lasting change. Duncan closed with these remarks, “Together, we can build a brighter future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.”

Duncan now works as a data clerk for East Africa Development Associates. He adds that through WOVOP he has been considered and inited by Paris Olympics 2024 set for August 22nd in France.
