Meet Roseanne, a passionate 23-year-old Dutch student pursuing her master's degree in International Development Studies specialising in Disaster Studies and Sociology at Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands. She recounts her transformative one-month internship experience with Women Volunteers for Peace (WOVOP) in February 2023. The purpose of her internship was pursuing her Master’s thesis research on how female peace builders shape local peace and security processes in a patriarchal society. Her keen interest in feminism, conflict, mitigation and peace building and immense contribution in proposal writing and fundraising was felt at WOVOP.


Roseanne reflected that from the moment she stepped into WOVOP, she was welcomed by a team of compassionate individuals and their commitment to human rights, peace advocacy, and empowering young women and girls created an inspiring atmosphere that set the stage for an enriching experience for her.


Guided by the WOVOP team, Roseanne immersed herself in the communities, engaging with courageous female peace builders. Through insightful interviews and conversations, she discovered the extraordinary resilience and determination of these women in challenging patriarchal norms. She stated that their stories shed light on their crucial role in shaping local peace and security processes, and their unwavering commitment to gender equality.


One of the most memorable moments Roseanne recalls was witnessing the impact of WOVOP's peace talks. “The team's energy and dedication were awe-inspiring as they organized a Peace Talk in Nyando sub county, actively listening to community members and raising awareness about peaceful conflict resolution methods. Additionally, the Student Talk at Kisumu Boys School showcased their ability to inspire and engage the next generation in the pursuit of peace and equality.”



Through her time with WOVOP, Roseanne realized the immense potential young women possess in transforming the world. She reflected that the organization's initiatives, combined with the team's unwavering commitment, emphasized the importance of empowering women in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. This experience deepened Roseanne's understanding of the complexities surrounding gender, conflict, and migration, igniting a passion within her to advocate for women's rights and empowerment.


Roseanne stated that her internship with WOVOP marked a pivotal chapter in her academic journey. It exposed her to the indomitable spirit of women working tirelessly to create a more peaceful and just world. The experience enriched her understanding of the intricate connections between gender, conflict, and migration, and fuelled her determination to contribute to positive change.Roseanne shared that she is grateful for the invaluable lessons, connections, and memories forged during her time with WOVOP and encourages support for organizations that strive to empower women and make a lasting impact on communities worldwide. “Together, we can build a brighter future, where peace and equality prevail.”
